A Trip to Sephora and the Salon

"The most beautiful makeup of a woman is passion.
But cosmetics are easier to buy."
(Yves Saint-Laurent)

I stopped by the nearby Sephora store in SoHo during a lunchtime stroll this afternoon, and picked up a few goodies.

I'm almost out of my current tube of this eye cream, which I've been using for at least the past year or so. I normally just use it around the eyes, although it can also be used around the mouth (not on the lips). It's formulated without sulfates, synthetic fragrances or dyes, phthalates, GMOs, or triclosan.

It's hard to explain what this product is -- it's not a primer or a moisturizer -- but I've been buying it for years and use it as a moisturizer. It's super light and healthy, sulfate/fragrance/dye/phthalate-free, and 1 pump is more than sufficient for me. On those really harsh, dry winter days I might try something a little thicker, but I don't even have a facial lotion now.

This is a clear topcoat with chunky and micro gold glitter. Fun! I mostly own OPI nail polishes, but I also like butter LONDON: it's pricier, but free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). I usually do my own nails, and I think I can count the number of times I've been to a nail salon on one hand, including my sister's wedding and my own wedding.

This line is new to me, but that could be because I haven't really been out shopping in a while. I decided to give it a try because it's $10 less expensive than the same size Philosophy bath and shower gels that I like (although most of the time I buy whatever looks good at Duane Reade).

I also noticed that Sephora is now selling WEN by Chaz Dean. I've used WEN cleansing conditioner in the past, and while it's a good product, I didn't find it to be good enough to justify the cost. Back to Duane Reade!

On the topic of hair, I finally got a trim on Friday. I usually walk-in to Supercuts or someplace similar, but on the recommendation of my friend Christine, I made an appointment at Kiyora Salon near Union Square. I'm accustomed to being in and out in 20 minutes, but Mari was a quiet, polite Japanese stylist who took her time with me and had a lot of comments -- and some concerned looks -- regarding my hair. She told me that my hair is: 1) shiny but dry at the ends, 2) naturally brown and not black, and 3) a little wavy and can hold a nice curl; all of which I knew but I appreciated her attention to detail. She laughed when I told her I don't own a blow dryer, use any styling products, or brush my hair, but she spoke slowly and deliberately when she said to me, "I want you to comb your hair at least once." I assured her I would...

Antigua Honeymoon

"Go to a place where you're not going to be stressed,
because a honeymoon itself can be a stressful thing."
(Diane von Furstenberg)

Our honeymoon was spent on Dickenson Bay in St. John's, Antigua. An-TEE-ga is a small Caribbean island with a total area of only 108 square miles. According to Wikipedia, some notable residents include Georgio Armani, Sir Richard Branson, Eric Clapton, Jamaica Kincaid, and Robin Leach. We didn't know anything about the island before choosing it as a honeymoon destination. All we knew was that the resort was well-regarded, the beach was beautiful, and the climate was ideal: dry and sunny and rarely hit by hurricanes. It was also more affordable and less time-consuming and stressful than planning a European or far-flung honeymoon, as amazing as one of those could have been.

Packing

I'm a light packer, and when preparing for travel I usually like to make a checklist of items to bring. (I own the Pack This! notepad, but its one major flaw is that it doesn't list towels!) As I mentioned previously, we spent the days preceding our honeymoon at the Jersey shore -- where we celebrated my nephew's 3rd birthday, which I'll post about separately -- so I didn't have much time to consider what to bring on our honeymoon. I ended up tossing in 2 swimsuits (but only wore 1), 3 pairs of shoes (I should have just brought the 1 pair of flat sandals I wore everyday, not the heels or sneakers), 2 hats, a few daytime cover-ups, and some easy-breezy dresses to wear in the evening.

I realized: 1) most of my clothing is pretty old, as I have pictures from vacations 6 years ago where I'm wearing the same things I wore last week, and 2) most of what I wore was given to me by my friend Leslie.

I brought a total of 4 cosmetics, pretty much my entire makeup routine for months now: Philosophy The Supernatural with SPF 20 in Beige, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Beach, Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment with SPF 15 in Passion, and Wet n Wild Waterproof Mascara.

Resort

We stayed at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, which has held the title of "The World's Most Romantic Resort" for 14 years. My assessment is that the resort itself is not more romantic than any other similar all-inclusive couples resort. It's more what you make of your stay: you could always pay up for a butlered suite and all the luxurious add-ons, but we chose not to.

Room

The resort is divided into 2 areas -- Caribbean Grove and Mediterranean Village -- so you get a "2-resorts-in-1" experience. We stayed in the newer Mediterrean Village, and our Venetian Oceanview Suite was clean and comfortable, with a nice balcony overlooking the landscaped grounds leading to the pool and beach.

Bed, sitting area, bathroom

I didn't take much advantage, but our bar and refrigerator were fully stocked with rum, vodka, whiskey, wine, beer, juice, soda, water, and tonic. I brewed coffee every morning, and we opened up the bottle of sparkling wine on our last night.

Aren't the lamps cute? The pineapple motif -- a symbol of hospitality -- is always a favorite of mine.

Spa

The Red Lane Spa at the resort was excellent: spacious but tranquil, beautifully appointed in every detail, with friendly and well-trained estheticians. I enjoyed 2 Caribbean-inspired treatments: a Lively Up Coffee Wrap on our second day in Antigua, and a Mud Massage Therapy on our third day.

Dining

There were many dining options, and as expected, we ate a lot. I don't think we were excessive, but Sam is much stricter-minded about diet and fitness than I am so he might disagree. He also went to the gym while we were there... even though it was on the opposite end of the resort.

Beachside buffets, nice dinners, desserts

Activities

Each day brought a new schedule of activities and events going on around the resort, but we mostly kept to ourselves. We challenged each other to 8-ball and 9-ball pool games, watched some Antiguan dancers and a fire entertainer on the beach, and took in some live music both outdoors and indoors. We spent most of our time at the beach or pool, and didn't do any excursions.

Goodbye, Antigua

It's been swell.

I hope you've enjoyed this look at our tropical getaway. It will probably be a long while before we have another one!

New England Minimoon

"If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes."
(Mark Twain)

Since we had to wait to go on our real honeymoon, we took a little minimoon trip up to New England 2 days after the wedding. While we were at The Inn at Thorn Hill & Spa in Jackson, New Hampshire, we decided to stop in Boston for another night before heading back down to New York.

Wet and Wild in New Hampshire

We were in moose country, but the weather in New Hampshire wasn't conducive for a tour, which took place in the evening. Although it was rainy and chilly, the B&B was lovely: elegantly rustic, quiet and peaceful, with a nice spa and really good food, views of the White Mountains, and a black bear sighting in the parking lot! The Inn at Thorn Hill was ranked 12th of the top 25 small resorts in the mainland United States by Condé Nast Traveler, and has received Wine Enthusiast Magazine's "Award of Ultimate Distinction."

Stopping at Cracker Barrel on the way (we beat the game on the first try
and my chicken fried chicken, eggs, biscuits, and grits were delicious)

Sports-Minded in Massachusetts

After we left New Hampshire, we went to see the Detroit Tigers play the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. It was my first time at the legendary stadium, even though Boston was my grad school stomping ground. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, and walked across the Charles River and down Commonwealth Avenue both to and from the game. Rather than going out on the town after the game, I wanted to head back to the hotel to watch the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, so we ordered room service and watched the Celtics play the Heat (sadly, we know how that turned out).

Brief but nice hotel stay
100 years of Fenway

We finally went on our official honeymoon last week! We left for the Caribbean island of Antigua on Monday, July 23. We spent 4 nights there and returned on Friday, July 27. Next time I'll share honeymoon pictures.

So after days of all-inclusive eating and drinking, followed by birthday dinners -- with my family on Sunday at Carmine's; with some friends last night at Radiance Tea House & Books, along with Sprinkles Cupcakes (today too!) and drinks at the Shoreham Bar; and with my husband tonight at Union Square Cafe -- I think I should probably take it easy for a few days. This morning I woke up to a homemade breakfast of cream cheese-stuffed cinnamon raisin French toast with fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. Stuffed... just like me.

I appreciate the kind birthday wishes, messages, and Facebook posts. I love celebrating birthdays, just not really my own. Growing up, I never had a party since it was always summer vacation, and I was also very shy. Even now, I prefer intimate gatherings or going out to dinner if anything -- probably since I'm getting older and don't want to dwell on adding another year!

Our Wedding: With This Ring...

"It is not your love that sustains the marriage, but from now on,
the marriage that sustains your love."
(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)

The morning of the wedding, Saturday, May 26, 2012, the bridesmaids and I had our hair and makeup done, and then reconvened at the hotel where I got dressed. Don, our wedding photographer, met us there to take some photos before we all headed to the church.

For ease and flexibility, I chose a wedding color palette rather than one or two defined shades. I didn't have a set color scheme, but I think "champagne and caviar" and "berries and cream" sum it up kind of nicely. The bridesmaids' dresses, flower girls' sashes, and stripes in Sam's tie were champagne; part of my jewelry, bridal bouquet, and Sam's boutonniere, my shoes, and the suits and ties were black; the bridesmaids' bouquets, ceremony flowers, and reception arrangements were in varying shades of pink and purple (which I had first written about in my "Say Yes to the Dress?" post last summer); and the stationery, flower girls' dresses, most of my bouquet and the flowers, and my wedding dress and veil were all ivory.

First, some still life shots...

I love this picture of my bridesmaids helping me with my dress and shoes. I wore shoes I already owned, and added vintage aurora borealis shoe clips so they really were my "something old" and "something (somewhat) blue"...

Yesterday, Sam finally took the USMLE Step 1, which he had been studying for over the past 7 weeks. Tomorrow, we're going to the Jersey shore with my family for the weekend, and on Monday we leave for our honeymoon! Thank you all for your love and support.
