Spring Things, Including our 2nd Anniversary, Sam's Graduation, and Leaving Brooklyn

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on infinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."
(C.S. Lewis)

The past month, and the year to come, has and will be full of changes for my husband and me, as I've mentioned earlier. Change is good, but moving is the worst; not specifically leaving NY (though I can hardly believe it's been 2 years since we moved to Brooklyn), or coming to Michigan, but just the act of moving. We'll most likely have to relocate at least a couple more times before we settle into what will hopefully be our permanent home, and even though we just got to Michigan this week and still have a lot of unpacking to do, I'm already dreading the next move a year from now because we'll have everything we just shipped or drove out here, plus everything we stored in NY, plus whatever we pick up along the way this year, plus baby gear and clothes... oh, and plus a baby! To keep from stressing, I think I'm just going to try to avoid thinking about it for the next several months at least.

Today is the first day of summer -- and the longest day of the year -- so I wanted to post a spring update now while I still have some time. I haven't finished uploading and looking through some of the more recent photos on my older camera, but please see below for some highlights from the last few months.

Spring Occasions

We flew to Chicago over the first weekend in April to celebrate our nephew Micah's 1st birthday. We made M&M and jelly bean candy pillars -- I did the one for the year of the snake, and Sam did the ones on the side -- which we took as our carry-on. (The ones Sam made got a little battered and started falling apart... just saying...)

Happy birthday, Micah! (Image: Frenzi Visuals)
My sister-in-law Grace did an amazing job with the superhero theme

Back in NYC, we went to the Party Rental Ltd. Spring Open House in mid-April to check out their newer products and get some refreshments before dinner. There was a lot of food -- and a donut table! -- so had we known, we probably would have just stayed there and snacked for a couple of hours.

When you work on events with strict budgets, it's hard to get fancy rentals
Mmmm... donuts, drinks, and more food

My father bought us tickets to see La Bohème at the Metropolitan Operawhich we finally had the chance to do in April. I'm glad we were able to see this, Tosca, and The Magic Flute this past season.

The day before Mother's Day, some of my good friends and I went to Ladurée in Soho for brunch, afternoon tea, and French macarons. Thanks again, ladies, for a lovely time!

I ate literally everything

Our friends Julienne and Elliot invited us to the Queens Museum Gala in early June, which was a lot of fun. How could it not be, with an Andy Warhol-inspired photo booth and cotton candy for dessert? Elliot's father was honored at the event.

We also went to the Hope For New York Spring Benefit, which was a nice event in support of the poor and marginalized in NYC, held at Hudson Common in the Hudson Hotel.

In addition to family and friends' birthdays, Mother's Day, and Father's Day, spring was also a time for baby showers (Heather and Jeannie), and a bridal shower and wedding (Emily). Congratulations, everyone! It was an honor to be part of your special days.

Our 2nd Anniversary

On May 26, 2014, we celebrated our 2nd anniversary. We decided to go to Atlantic City, since it was close enough to drive to easily, but still felt different and far away enough from the city to get away for a couple of nights. We stayed at Revel, which is one of the newest casino resorts in AC, and enjoyed some great meals, a relaxing stroll down the boardwalk, and a windy afternoon at the pool. I also spent some time at the wonderful Exhale Spa. Neither of us really gambles, but I found my game: the Sex and The City slot machine! I won $40.01.

Relaxing at the pool and spa, which had more pools and a salt room
Yummy tapas and huge squid ink paella at Amada

The day we returned to NYC, we had a reservation at The NoMad, which capped off our anniversary celebration. If you haven't been there for dinner, the whole-roasted chicken for two and the milk & honey dessert -- their signature dishes -- were delicious.

Brooklyn Bucket List

Before we left Brooklyn, I had somewhat of a bucket list in my mind of things to do, since we likely will never live in there again. Some -- such as Smorgasburg, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry blossom festival, and the Brooklyn Museum -- I've experienced before but wanted to go to again. Others -- including a few local restaurants we had not gotten around to trying, BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge -- were done for the first time.

Smorgasburg 2 weekends in a row! So much food to try...
Too many vendors to re-list here (check out my Instagram for more info)
Sakura matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Eating at Grand Army Plaza food trucks outside Prospect Park
Ai Wei Wei and Swoon exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum until August
Dinner at Marco's, a trattoria from the Franny's team, right across Flatbush Avenue
Dinner at al di la, another trattoria just down 5th Avenue
Checking out BAM and the DanceAfrica Bazaar before ice cream
More iced creamy goodness at L'Abero dei Gelati in Park Slope

Sam's Medical School Commencement

On Saturday, June 14, my husband and my brother-in-law both graduated from medical school! The St. George's University commencement took place in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, and the weather that day was perfect for gathering outside by the fountain afterwards and taking photos.
Sam's sister, brother-in-law, nephew, and niece were able to make it to NY for the occasion (after terrible flight delays and a cancellation the day before), and it was great to be able to celebrate with them as well as with my side of the family. After the ceremony, we had dinner at IchiUmi, and then met up with friends for drinks at The Archive.

The Move to Michigan

We were able to get a lot of things packed, shipped, and stored before graduation, but by the time we were supposed to leave on Monday, there was still a lot to do, and Sam was the one who had to do all the heavy lifting. Somehow, we had the apartment cleaned, got everything out, packed up our car with no room to spare, and hit the road. We stayed overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in Clearfield, PA to break up the trip, and arrived at our destination in Michigan on Tuesday evening.

This isn't a picture of the car packed up, but here's Greg, our Honda CR-V

Since we're staying with my mother-in-law, we don't have any of our furniture here and won't need to buy much, which is fine with me because like I said, I'm already concerned about how we're going to move back! But we did buy a couple of inexpensive nightstands at IKEA the other day, and I got a cute glass lamp to place on top of mine. I also needed more hangers, so I got 2 boxes of Real Simple clothing hangers. I own the slimline hangers in Stone but left them in storage in NY, and the Bed Bath & Beyond we went to here only had the bulk boxes in Peacock or Pink, so I decided to be colorful and went with the Peacock. Plus, it better complements the seafoam-colored wall paint in the house.

I have a number of inexpensive maternity clothing basics -- mostly t-shirts, tank tops, and jeans or casual pants from Gap, Old Navy, and Target (on the 2nd shelf in the photo above, plus a few maxi dresses on hangers) -- which I haven't started wearing yet. Today I'm at 19 weeks and 5 days, and as of now I can still wear my regular clothes, but I'm sure I'll be transitioning to some maternity clothes in the next few weeks.

I'll post a pregnancy update separately. Thank you for reading and sharing in our lives!

We Are One

"As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, meekness, and patience.
Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other;
just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
(Colossians 3:12-14)

Scripture reading from our wedding program (Colossians 3:12-17)

I hope everyone enjoyed Memorial Day weekend! Our 1st wedding anniversary was on Sunday, and we spent it in Chicago, where we visited family and friends over the long weekend. Thank you to our wonderful hosts Grace and Tommy, as well as Vivien and Jace; we were so happy to spend time with our nephews and niece and celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday, and to meet baby James and play with Anna.

Of course we indulged in some great Chicago food during our trip: a late night dinner at GT Fish & Oyster, a drive-through lunch from Portillo's, a great selection of Do-Rite Donuts, Intelligentsia Coffee (which I found out just opened at The High Line Hotel in NYC), delicious croissants at Hendrickx Belgian Bread Crafter, and deep-dish pizza delivery from Giordano's. Today I emailed my friend Jee Young a list of foods and places she should try when she visits Chicago this summer, which included these and others from previous trips.

Our Anniversary Dinner

On Sunday evening, we checked into The Westin Lombard, a nice hotel outside of Chicago. For our anniversary dinner that night, we went to RPM Italian, a restaurant owned by Giuliana and Bill Rancic. The vibe was modern and trendy but the layout was smart and comfortable, and the food was great; if you go, try the lobster caprese and Mama DePandi's bucatini pomodoro. Our server recently moved to Chicago from the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC, and told me he loved my nails (I had tried lacquer strips for the first time that day, which I posted a photo of on Instagram), and at the end of our meal remarked on how very proud of us he was for how much we ate! I really wanted to order the tartufo at my sister-in-law's recommendation, but after a huge meal and a complimentary dessert, we decided to save that for next time.

Our Wedding Cake, One Year Later

Yes, we ate our one-year-old defrosted wedding cake, and surprisingly, it tasted pretty good! We only had a quarter of the top tier, since my father had cut and kept the rest to eat at home after the wedding. I decorated our cake -- vanilla with strawberries and cream -- with mini cake bunting that read "We Are One" in pastel pink and purple, printed from The TomKat Studio and strung on pink pastel baker's twine.

Wedding Cake Recipe

4 lbs. love
1/2 lb. good looks
1 lb. sweet temper
1 lb. butter of youth
1 lb. blindness of faults
1 lb. wit
1 lb. good humor
2 tablespoons sweet argument
1 pint rippling laughter
1 wine glass of common sense
A dash of modesty

Put the love, good looks, and sweet temper into a well-furnished house. Beat the butter of youth to a cream, and mix well together with the blindness of faults. Stir the wit and good humor into the sweet argument, then add the rippling laughter and common sense. Work the whole together until everything is well-mixed, and bake gently forever. To my dear husband: Happy 1st anniversary! I'm looking forward to continuing to experience life together and discovering what our future brings.

Piquing My Pinterest

"There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind."
(C.S. Lewis)

The C.S. Lewis quote above is one of the most popular and repinned sayings on Pinterest, the pinboard-style photo-sharing website that serves as a tool to find inspiration and share it with others. I created an account a while back when it was still pretty new, but I never got into it, even when I was wedding planning. Maybe it's my "urban Amish" tendencies, or my lack of bandwidth for multiple modes of social networking, but I didn't know how best to utilize it. It wasn't until I recently installed the Pinterest mobile app on my iPad and phone that I realized how easy and fun it can be to create personal inspiration boards and pin, organize, and share the things I like. I also appreciate that sources are linked.

Currently, most of my Pinterest boards are titled to correspond to the labels I created for this blog: Adventure + Travel, Arts + Crafts, Home Life, Occasions + Holidays, Sugar + Spice, and Weddings (please see screenshots below). I also have a board called Lookbook with some recent awards show looks, and will soon create boards on Beauty + Fashion, Books, Music + Movies, and Health + Wellness. (Note: After finally realizing that my blog labels containing "+" weren't being properly categorized, I replaced them with "&".)

Who else pins, and what is your favorite Pinterest category (Art, Food & Drink, Quotes, Women's Fashion, etc.)? I hope you take a look and follow me or any of my boards. I'm sure I'll be pinning this weekend, with Winter Storm Nemo keeping us inside... and making another banana cream pie!

Guest Post: Bridal Shower Details

I'm delighted to share a guest post from my amazing friend, bridesmaid, and baker extraordinaire who was instrumental in throwing me a beautiful bridal shower complete with pretty invitations, handmade decorations, delicious favors that guests still rave about, and a paper and ribbon bouquet for the rehearsal. Here, she details the steps she took to make everything come together, with photos she snapped along the way. Thank you, Christine!

"Hearts and flowers, ribbon and lace, the look of love upon her face.
A happy heart that's hard to hide, this woman is soon to be a bride!"
(Author Unknown)

In April, I had the honor -- in addition to her sister and closest friends (Maureen, Leslie, Angela, Robyn, and Vivien) -- of organizing and hosting our dear Sharon's bridal shower.

We certainly felt a lot of pressure to provide a celebration worthy of such an expert party and event planner. After some discussion, the bridesmaids came to the decision that the theme of her shower would be "Sharon's favorite things," which was largely reflected in the food and desserts. We also tried our very best to keep consistent with her wedding color scheme of berries, cream, champagne, and caviar.

I think all our efforts came together quite nicely. It was a great day to celebrate our friend! :)

Invitation

Given Sharon's love of peonies, we picked the "Perfect Peonies" invitation from Wedding Paper Divas. After lots of back and forth, we finally decided on 'peaches and cream' (lighter pink) over 'pink azalea' (a pinkish-purple) for the print color. There were some tough decisions to make! :) Sneaky little Sharon even tried to find out what we were doing by offering to "help" us. Of course we didn't let her! :P

Decorations

We divided the responsibilities with regards to invitations, food, desserts, and games. I was in charge of decorations. I knew I wanted to include some personal and homemade touches that are so characteristic of the thoughtful cards and gifts that Sharon often gives us.

After searching the internet, I came across 2 websites. One provided instructions on how to make a crepe paper pomander. It isn't comprised of peonies, but it's pretty, floral, and I knew I'd be able to make it fit the color scheme. It would make a great centerpiece. Plus, the supply list was pretty minimal.

I had no idea how many flowers I'd need to cover the ball, so I started out by making 100. Turns out I needed closer to 200! After I glued all the flowers on, I could still see white styrofoam peeking through. So I either rolled some smaller flowers or just tucked some pieces of crepe paper (basically I got lazy, OK? hahaha) in the crevices. At the shower, we placed it atop a trumpet vase.

I came across another website that showed how to make tissue paper peonies. Instead of using floral wire, I used pink thread since I wanted it to blend in. These were so pretty and yet very easy to make. We suspended these with thread on a piece of modern sculpture that was in the party space.

Favors

I was most stressed out about what to do about the favors. I bought a cake pop book a while back, but had never actually tried making them. So of course I left things until the last minute and decided to make them for the first time, right before her shower. Yay! Hahaha.

First, I followed Bakerella's instructions on how to make cake balls. I used Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake mix and cream cheese frosting. The shower was on Saturday, so I baked the cake on Thursday night and refrigerated it, taking into consideration the fact that the cake would need to cool down before I handled it. On Friday, I crumbled the cake by hand according to the instructions. After rolling the cake into ovoid balls, I pushed them through a small flower cookie cutter to shape the base of the cupcake. Then I rounded the top to resemble the top of a cupcake.

Unfortunately, the dipping of cake into candy melts is extremely messy, so I couldn't take many step-by-step pictures, but Bakerella has some good ones here. You dunk the base of the cupcake into the candy first and then push the stick about 3/4-inch into the cake. I used thicker sticks that are intended for cookies, not lollipops. One word of advice is that you should dip the stick in a bit of the candy melt before sticking it into the cake. Once the stick is in place, hold it for a few seconds in the position you want because the candy melt dries and hardens pretty quickly! For garnish, I thought it would be perfect to use red Skittles on top since they have an S (for Sharon), in addition to some sprinkles.

The morning of, I still had to create some labels for the favors. I'm sure there is some easier way to do this, but I ended up creating them on PowerPoint and printing them out on some cream-colored paper that I had. I literally only had one sheet so I had to make sure I got it right. After cutting out the labels, I tied them on using a bit of black ribbon.

To display them, I bought a basket and placed 2 styrofoam sheets (one sheet didn't seem sturdy enough to hold the sticks in the upright position) that I had punctured with the ends of the cake pop sticks. After placing all the cake pops in position, I then covered the styrofoam with pink tissue paper that I shredded in my paper shredder. We had some extra that we placed in a rectangular vase with some tissue paper.

Rehearsal Bouquet

I took all the wrapping paper and ribbons home with me. I created a couple more flowers using some of the tissue paper and the paper tissue peonies that we had used as decorations. I made a base for the bouquet for Sharon to hold using all the ribbons and a technique (barrel stitch) for making bracelets that I learned in elementary school. Sharon truly looked lovely in her flowing dress as she walked down the aisle with her dad and her now-husband at the rehearsal and then at her wedding! I feel lucky that I was able to partake in their special day. <3
